Kentucky Route 77 may cover only about 14 miles, but it passes through one of the most unforgettable stretches of roadway in eastern Kentucky.
This drive features the historic Nada Tunnel, a narrow passage that carries KY 77 through roughly 900 feet of solid rock. Beyond the tunnel, the road crosses the Red River, passes the old steel bridge, and continues away from the familiar scenery of the Gorge into the quieter surroundings of Menifee County.
Along the way, this video explores the history of Nada Tunnel, the communities and landmarks connected to the road, the reasons so many people are drawn to the Red River Gorge area, and the changing landscape along KY 77. It also includes the Frenchburg Job Corps and the sharp contrast between the busy Gorge corridor and the rural countryside farther north.
This is more than a drive through a famous tunnel. It is a journey along the full length of one of Kentucky’s most distinctive short highways.
